NOOL is a two-sided marketplace that connects customers who want fully custom, embroidered garments directly with independent weaver-artisans — removing the large manufacturers who currently pay them the least for their skill. Built as our B.Tech final year project and submitted for the Kerala Startup Mission Idea Grant.

The problem

Talented artisans, invisible to the customer.

  • Skilled hand-embroidery artisans in Kerala often work as subcontracted labour for large garment companies, receiving a small fraction of the final retail price.
  • Customers who want genuinely custom embroidered clothing have very few good options: mass fashion offers cheap printed “embroidery-look” designs, while commissioning real hand embroidery usually means knowing a tailor personally.
  • There is no organised digital channel that lets a customer commission custom embroidery the way a food delivery app lets you order from a specific restaurant.

Our solution

Two apps, one direct connection.

  • A customer app — browse or create embroidery designs, customise fabric, colour and pattern, and place orders on shirts, kurtas (men and women) and t-shirts to start.
  • An artisan app — receive matched orders directly, view the full design spec, accept and fulfil orders, and get paid automatically on delivery confirmation.

Customer picks a garment, designs or selects a pattern, and chooses fabric and colour.

The app shows price and estimated delivery upfront; payment is held in escrow.

The order is matched to a suitable artisan based on skill and location.

The artisan accepts and produces the garment to the exact spec.

The finished garment is packed and picked up — by NOOL's pickup agents or a courier partner.

The customer confirms delivery; payment is released to the artisan, minus commission.

Both sides rate the experience, building a trust layer for future orders.

What makes this different

Real artisans, not machines.

  • Existing “custom embroidery” platforms — Qikink, Printify, Printful and similar print-on-demand players — are catalogue-driven and use computerised machines on stock products; there is no artisan on the other end.
  • NOOL is a marketplace for genuinely bespoke, human-made embroidery, with the artisan's livelihood built into the business model rather than treated as a cost to minimise.

Fair by design — Revenue is tied to order volume — not a flat artisan subscription — so NOOL's incentives stay aligned with helping underpaid artisans earn more.

Rooted in Kerala's handloom regions.

North Paravur / Chendamangalam

One of Kerala's four traditional handloom centres, with a GI tag for its dhotis and set-mundu — a structured, government-recognised entry point for onboarding artisans.

Kozhikode & the Malabar belt

Home to the historic “Malabar loom” tradition and close to our founding team — an accessible base to pilot artisan onboarding and quality processes.

Next: Balaramapuram (Thiruvananthapuram) and Kuthampully (Thrissur) — Kerala's other GI-tagged handloom clusters.

Social impact

Artisans deal directly with customers through the platform, with transparent, order-based earnings instead of subcontracted rates.

Preserving a skill

Hand embroidery is a shrinking trade against machine printing; a premium, demand-generating channel supports its survival.

A platform-based model formalises and grows income without requiring relocation to a factory.

Jul 2026 – Mar 2027

Phase 1 — Software development

Built entirely within our B.Tech final year project: requirement analysis, UI/UX and architecture (Jul–Sep), core apps and admin panel (Oct–Jan), AI assistant and Design Feasibility Engine, then testing and documentation (Feb–Mar).

After Mar 2027

Phase 2 — Artisan onboarding & pilot launch

Onboard pilot artisans from the Kozhikode/Malabar belt and North Paravur/Chendamangalam, launch pilot orders on shirts, kurtas and t-shirts, and refine logistics from real feedback.

Next

Phase 3 — Scale within Kerala

Grow the artisan network to additional GI-tagged handloom clusters and market to the premium, gifting, and wedding-wear segment.

Long term

Phase 4 — Expand

Extend to sarees, jeans and other categories, explore B2B white-labelling for boutique brands, and introduce optional artisan-owned automation tooling.
